چکیده

Host fish acquire immunity to the parasitic larvae (glochidia) of freshwater mussels (Unionidae). We investigated the persistence of acquired immunity of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepède, 1802) to glochidia of the broken rays mussel, Lampsilis reeveiana (Call, 1887). Fish received 3 successive priming infections with glochidia to induce an immune response. Primed fish were held at 21-23 C and were challenged (re-infected) at intervals after priming. Metamorphosis success was quantified as the percent of attached glochidia that metamorphosed to the juvenile stage and were recovered alive. Metamorphosis success at 3, 7, and 12 months after priming was significantly lower on primed fish (26%, 40%, and 68% respectively) than on control fish (85%, 93%, and 92% respectively). A second group of largemouth bass was similarly primed and blood was extracted 0, 3, 7 and 12 months after priming. Immunoblotting was used to detect host serum antibodies to L. reeveiana glochidia proteins. Serum antibodies were evident in primed fish, but diminished over time and were nearly undetectable 7 and 12 months after priming. Primed fish had antibodies present in their serum within 4 days when re-infected 7 months after priming, but fish that received their first infection did not. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that antibodies are at least part of the mechanism of acquired immunity to glochidia. Acquired immunity of host fish potentially affects natural reproduction and artificial propagation of unionids, many of which are of conservation concern.

Cross-resistance of largemouth bass to glochidia of unionid mussels.

We tested whether host fish that acquired resistance to glochidia of one mussel species were cross-resistant to glochidia of other species. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were primed with 4-5 successive infections of glochidia of Lampsilis reeveiana. The percentage of attached glochidia that survived and transformed to the juvenile stage (transformation success) was compared between pr...

The effects of temperature change on the hatching success and larval survival of largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu.

In this study, the effects of abrupt temperature change on the hatching success and larval survival of eggs, yolk-sac larvae (YSL) and larvae above nest (LAN), for both largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu were quantified. Temperature had a significant effect on hatching success and time to 50% mortality, with large heat shocks causing accelerated morta...

Survival of Foul-Hooked Largemouth Bass(Micropterus salmoides)

We conducted a field experiment to determine the survival rate of foul-hooked (hooked external to the oral cavity) largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) caught and released by recreational anglers. Of 42 largemouth bass caught with hard-plastic baits containing three treble hooks, 15 were hooked only within the mouth and 27 had at least one hook penetrating the external surface of the fish (i...

The growth of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede), under constant and fluctuating temperatures

Growth of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, was tested under constant (1 5" C, 29" C) and cyclic ( I 8 h at 15" C, 6 h at 29" C) temperature conditions. Six groups of 10 fish each were tested; one group under each constant condition, and four groups in the thermocycles. The four latter groups differed in the timing of their feeding; one group each was fed at the start and middle of the wa...
